We can wish there were something in all of us to prevent us from harming a child but that “something” does not exist. People do harm children, people do neglect children to their detriment, and people do use children for sexual purposes.

To be abused or neglected at any age is devastating, but it is much more so to children. The consequences of child abuse are catastrophic for the child, complex and costly for society.

Preventing child abuse effectively requires that knowledge informs our activities. Knowledge without action is not prevention. Action without knowledge can be misdirected an ineffective. We do our best when we know and act wisely.
